Off-road capable

The Unimog UHN series has long been regarded as the benchmark in terms of off-road mobility for series production commercial trucks.

The Unimog UHN U 4000/U 5000 impresses with its unique off-road capability facilitated by the flexible frame concept with long travel coil springs for high stability on the road and enormous torsional flexibility off-road.

The superior all-wheel drive torque tube concept with differential cross locks in both axles and portal type reduction gearing, makes for axles with exceptional ground clearance.

Durable

Since 1946, the last more than seventy five years of Unimog production has proved how durable these remarkable vehicles are. Thousands of Unimogs frequently as old as forty or fifty years are still at work every day, launching lifeboats, fighting fires, feeding animals on remote mountain farms, refuelling mining equipment and taking tourists on game drives through the bush.

Other than the fact that a Unimog is built to an exceptionally high standard of quality, what sets a Unimog apart is that it wasn’t built to mostly run on good roads with the occassional off-road foray.

It is designed and built to be able to cope with never running on a surfaced road ever. From the three point mounting of cabs, body work and powertrain to the deep oil pan allowing safe operation on 100% or 45 degree inclines, every item on the Unimog is built to cope with harsh off-road environments.

In addition to good design and immense chassis strength, attention to small details like raised axle and transmission breather tubes, a sealed engine oil dipstick and heavy door hinges contribute to making sure that Unimogs outlast any other off-road trucks.

Not only does this mean that you may own a Unimog for a very long time, it also means that Unimogs retain their value very well, and many of them sell for their original price or better after years of faithful service.

Portal Axles

Unimog is recognised as being especially capable off-road because of it’s unmatched ground clearance. Unimog is unique in its use of Portal axles where the vehicle wheel centre line is some 200mm lower than, the axle tube centre line. This means that a Unimog will always have 200mm more ground clearance than a comparable vehicle with conventional axles.

Torque Tube Suspension

Unimog utilises a unique suspension system comprising torque tubes and long travel coil springs. This, in combination with a flexible chassis offers unprecedented wheel travel offering unmatched off-road traction and comfort. Because the Unimog’s tyres are always kept firmly planted on the ground by the unique suspension system, they provide the grip required for unsurpassed off-road mobility.

Central Tyre Inflation (CTI)

Unimog is offered with a factory fitted central tyre inflation system allowing the vehicle’s tyres to be inflated or deflated while the vehicle is in motion. This feature significantly improves flotation over sand and soft ground. When reduced tyre pressure is used put a longer length of tyre tread in contact with the ground, traction can often be almost doubled, further enhancing the Unimog’s spectacular off-road performance.
